Senior Portraits at Denver Botanic Gardens and Cheesman Park | Ryan’s Session

We first met Ryan’s family a few years ago when we photographed his older brother’s senior session. It was such a joy getting to work with them again. Returning clients always feel like old friends, and this session was no exception.

Ryan wanted a mix of polished portraits and something that reflected his love for soccer, so we planned a split senior session. One part took place at the Denver Botanic Gardens for a manicured, natural backdrop, and the second at Cheesman Park to capture his sporty side.

Weather Worries Turned to Golden Light

Colorado weather likes to keep us on our toes. We had to reschedule Ryan’s original session because of rain, and the second date was looking pretty iffy too. But we decided to move forward anyway, and we’re so glad we did! The skies cleared just in time, and we ended the evening with a stunning sunset over Cheesman Park that gave his photos the most beautiful, warm glow.

A Favorite Garden Backdrop

The Denver Botanic Gardens is one of my personal favorites for portrait sessions, and it was the perfect fit for Ryan’s more classic pics. We had water features, greenery, pops of color and textured pathways to work with, plus that soft late afternoon light. I slowed things down here on purpose. No running around yet, just Ryan being himself in front of the camera while the garden did most of the heavy lifting.

From Garden to Field

Then we headed to Cheesman Park. I had Ryan sprinting and kicking the ball over and over so we could catch real motion. I want authentic action shots, not a fake pose of it. He ran it back every single time we asked, no complaints, and honestly it was a blast. Add a sunset behind him and this ended up being my favorite part of the shoot.
